Canfranc Harbour Square
The Plaza del Puerto de Canfranc is located in a place where two very different urban fabrics meet; the dense area of Puente de Vallecas, to the south and southeast of the square, and the more recent open block developments of the Numancia neighbourhood, to the west and north. The former is very compact and lacking in open public spaces, and the latter is greener and fluffier. Without losing its unity, the new square is a hinge between the two and responds to both with two differentiated enclosures. One in the lower part, 'la vega', cooler and heavily wooded with melias and the other, in the upper part or 'altozano', open, flexible, built and prepared for any civic use. Both change over time with flowering and overflow, contrasting with the harshness of the surrounding urban fabric.
The significant unevenness of the square - almost three metres - is resolved by separating it into two different small squares. A small diagonal retaining wall arranges this fold, makes the lower square more intimate and delimits the more open and flexible surface of the elevated space with a parapet. In the sunniest part of the square is the plant screen on which wisteria and virgin vines will grow. It is a powerful yet light element, which gives a clear identity to the square and will have changing colours and tones. In addition to the vegetation and the battery of twenty nests that favour the settlement of birds, this equipped screen contains the square's lighting.
