Geography

Lucija is a unique place on the Slovenian coast. Nestled in a beautiful Mediterranean bay between the towns of Piran and Portorož, the hills of Kampolin and the splendid salt fields of Secoveljske, close to the main access road that runs along the coast to the international airports of Trieste, Venice and Ljubljana, Lucija has great potential because it is a place of passage, a gateway to the Slovenian coast and its landscape. But Lucija lacks personality, an iconic vision that sets it apart from other places. Every town on the Slovenian coast (Koper, Izola, Piran, Portoroz) has its own character, but Lucija does not. Its components are very heterogeneous and of very low visual and architectural value. This cannot continue; it is a missed opportunity for the Slovenian coast. The Lucija and Marina Portoroz project therefore becomes an opportunity for Lucija. Opportunities of the location

The site offers many opportunities for development: it has a well-established marina, plenty of empty space ready to be occupied, and low-value facilities that can be relocated.

Objectives

Strengthen the continuity of the Slovenian coastline; provide a specific character to insert it into the existing sequence of places along the coast; build a fragment of a city for people to live in; provide Lucija with better, modern facilities; resolve Lucija's parking needs; increase hotel and spa facilities; expand the marina and community moorings for boats; and build a new collective and public space for everyone.

A Mediterranean site

What specific character should Lucija have? The answer is not far to seek; the geographical and cultural context provides the character that allows Lucija to be reincorporated into the landscape to which it belongs: the Mediterranean. But what is the Mediterranean all about? We could agree that it is about a few sensory qualities that can be physically materialised through elements of the landscape: the breeze (the new extension of the marina), the shade (a pine tree promenade), the fragrance (an orchard with 1,800 fruit trees), sociability (a walking trail), enjoyment (new facilities such as the hotel and spa) and, of course, optimism.
