Madrid Río
The Madrid Río project is the most significant development in Madrid in recent decades, and is arguably one of the most ambitious public space projects in Europe in recent years. In 2003, the city council decided to bury the six-kilometre section of the first major ring road that ran along the banks of the Manzanares River. The construction of the road 30 years ago meant that the city's connection to the river was severed, leaving it isolated, inaccessible and invisible.
The team led by Ginés Garrido, comprising the firms Burgos & Garrido Arquitectos, Porras La Casta, Rubio & A-Sala, and West 8, won the international competition launched in 2005 to design a public space in the area freed up by the underground relocation of the motorway. The project connects Madrid with its surrounding landscapes, transforming the Manzanares River into a point of connection between the city and its geography.
Madrid Río comprises 150 hectares of green spaces and 6 hectares of public and sports facilities, as well as centres for interpretation and artistic creation, an urban beach, children's play areas, kiosks and cafés. This project has returned the city of Madrid to the geography of the river.
