University of the Andes Civic Centre
The Civic Center project of the Universidad de Los Andes is a milestone in the design and construction of campuses, both for the University and for Colombia. The University's conviction to align itself with the social reality marked by the national effort to build peace is reflected in the academic innovation to educate new generations to face the post-conflict and, also, in the way of building democratic educational infrastructures that offer public spaces open to the city and dilute the limits between different users. Aware of the relevance of the common construction of a new country from the academy, this project proposes a new urban centrality where culture, education, nature and technology are mixed openly to the citizens, adding to the urban environment and demonstrating how the city can evolve to be a participant in the social changes of the country.
The project is based on three main components: [1] the creation of active public spaces that articulate with the existing network of public spaces on the site, highlighting the importance of the pedestrian; [2] the extension of the ecological system of the site by prolonging existing and future natural structures; and [3] the enhancement of the academic and social mission of the University by providing spaces where academic processes and civic activities can coexist.
