Oblique Bridge
The Oblique Bridge was part of Madrid's M30 motorway and the 2005 undergrounding of the M30 left it abandoned and unused and it was due to be demolished. But it is a valuable structure from 1969 by engineer Fernández-Casado. The deck is a very slender trapezoidal section slab of post-tensioned concrete and has a complex, gently cambered and curvilinear layout, in keeping with the 'fast' geometry of the motorway.
The work of the underground construction required the demolition of one of its abutments and its foundations, and the cutting of the ribs, leaving it partially cantilevered. However, despite this damage, the bridge remained standing. The Madrid Río project renovated it, transforming it into a pedestrian and cycle bridge. The rehabilitation of the bridge required delicate calculation work to restore the heads of the ribs and give them the appropriate tension, and to rebuild the lost abutment, the foundations of which rested on the screens of the M30 tunnels. The reinforcement of the deck allows for the planting of pine trees to give continuity to the vegetation on both banks of the river.
