King's Bridge
The ensemble consists of the King's Bridge, treated as a plaza over the riverbed, and the esplanade to which it leads, separating the river from the Casa de Campo on the left bank. The space is built on the footprint of the buried tunnels and becomes an open and unobstructed area, an immense balcony overlooking the river, overlooking the atmosphere crowned by the Royal Palace perched on the high elevations of Madrid. The esplanade is formed exclusively by an extended sheet of granite and limestone that adopts a gently undulating topography as it negotiates with the underground highway infrastructure.
The opening of Campo del Moro and the Casa de Campo to the city through the combination of this complex creates an unprecedented situation in Madrid. The multiple flows that until now were cut off by vehicle traffic now fully encompass a green space of more than 1,700 hectares. The historic and consolidated center, the dense center, seamlessly connects with a natural space populated by thousands of trees. The transition between city and park is achieved through subtle, restrained pieces sensitive to the past, and with them, the monumentality is established at the foot of the elevated city.
