'Y' River Bridge
The Madrid Río project's “Pine Saloon” runs along both banks of the Manzanares River, which is linked by the “Y” bridge. On the right bank, to the southwest of the river, the “Pine Saloon” stretches from one end of the park to the other, covering more than six kilometres; on the left bank, it covers more than two kilometres. The “Y” bridge connects two identical landscapes on both banks, built with a very dense and exclusive plantation of pine trees. The bridge is constructed with dense steel latticework that completely envelops it, on the sides of the deck and below and above it. This green-painted steel latticework establishes the continuity of the enclosed, green and enveloping space of the pine forests on both banks.
The position and layout of the bridge are the result of a temporary situation. The section of the Madrid Río project that was occupied by the Atlético de Madrid stadium will not be completed until 2024, thirteen years after the bridge. The bridge's route had to take two very different circumstances into account: first, as the finishing touch to the park on one side of the river and, in a few years' time, linking the urban development resulting from the demolition of the stadium.
