Almuñecar Bridge
The Almuñecar bridge replaces another bridge in the same location that had become obsolete, as it was narrow, inaccessible and did not allow bicycles to pass. The new bridge allows pedestrians and cyclists to cross, connecting the recently built cycle lanes on both sides of the river in north-west Madrid. It has a span of 45 metres and is 3.6 metres wide. It is constructed with an extremely lightweight U-shaped structure made of high-strength carbon fibre composite, which was designed and manufactured at Acciona's New Materials Innovation Centre. The interior of the bridge is lined with prefabricated concrete pieces, also U-shaped, which protect the delicate structure of the deck, give it strength, increase the dead load to prevent uncomfortable vibrations and cover a high-voltage power line housed between the deck and the concrete pieces.
