Princesa Pedestrian Footbridge
The undergrounding of the M30 motorway and the Madrid Río project have transformed the previously inaccessible banks of the Manzanares River into a valuable public space. The few bridges that previously crossed the river, which also had to span the two motorway trunks, were demolished. This created the need to design and build bridges that would connect the urban fabric of both banks at ground level. The Legazpi Bridge is one of them. The bridge has a span of 45 metres and is constructed with two variable-depth beams made of composite steel profiles that form the parapets. The interior, both the pavement and the underside of both girders, is clad with thick ipe wood planks. It is a neutral and repeatable but precise bridge, with two faces: a warm and comfortable interior and an anonymous and bare exterior in the ambiguous green colour of Madrid's urban infrastructure, such as traffic lights, street lamps and railings.
